Jesse Chisholm Monument Near Site of Hawk Eyes Scene

Here is a monument to the famous frontiersman, Jesse Chisholm, that sits near the site of one of his trading posts on the North Canadian River in present-day west Oklahoma City. To the west of the monument is the North Canadian River. To the north is Lake Overholser, which didn’t exist in Chisholm’s day. To the south is Northwest 10th street, a busy metropolitan thoroughfare. Just immediately to the east of the monument sits a storage facility and, still further east, people, businesses, and homes. It is on this spot that Hawk Eyes is reunited with Little Doe, a Cherokee Princess, and the great love of his life.

Hawk Eyes Cover by Laura Shinn

I want to say “thank you” to the immensely talented designer Laura Shinn for her brilliant creation that is the cover for my upcoming western novel, Hawk Eyes. Laura’s stunning work is not just an attention getter –it also captures the essence of Hawk Eye’s account. Her work adds color to his narrative, while also helping to take the reader back to those early days on the Western frontier. Hawk Eyes will be available in just a couple of weeks. I hope all of you saddle up with him for an enjoyable ride!

Gordon Yellowman, Cheyenne Ledger Artist

Gordon Yellowman of El Reno, Oklahoma is an amazing fellow. When he's not teaching art at the Cheyenne Arapaho Tribal College at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, he's teaching the Cheyenne language to young people or painting another stunning piece of Cheyenne ledger art. Here's my story about him in the August issue of Distinctly Oklahoma Magazine.
